The Two Mamas Story
Two Mamas, Inc. started their business in the summer of 2001. Two friends got together and decide to plan for their futures. Kathy J. Graham wanted to fund her retirement and Amy H. Thrasher wanted to plan for her son’s college education. And the story begins…
Five years prior, in the summer of 1995, Kathy married her husband Matt. They planted their first garden together; this garden consisted of sixty-one tomato plants and twenty jalapeno plants. And guess what, every one of the tomato plants and jalapeno plants lived and were very fruitful. Kathy had to find different ways to use all of these tomatoes and peppers, so she made stewed tomatoes, vegetable soup, canned whole tomatoes and then came a long a salsa recipe. A dear friend of Kathy’s gave her a recipe for salsa. Over the years Kathy added to this recipe and took a few things away from this recipe and came up with some wonderful tasting salsa in the end. She started making salsa on a regular basis. She gave it to friends and relatives. She says she made somewhere around 180 jars of salsa and by the summer’s end and it was all gone. Everybody loved it. She kept on making salsa the following years until, she had made over 300 jars one summer and every bit of it was gone, in less than three months. People actually offered to pay money for her salsa. Then along comes Amy. Amy saw that Kathy had a wonderful product and that people actually paid for it, and with this in mind and Amy’s marketing background, she decided to ask Kathy to start a business with her. At first Kathy was reluctant to the idea. She wasn’t sure it was something that she wanted to do. Kathy took her salsa along with chips, around their hometown and offered it to people to try and she asked them to give her their honest opinion about her product. Kathy and Amy marketed the salsa for about eighteen months, before deciding on launching it in the market. It took approximately two months to do all the paperwork, to get the business up and running. The first cooking date for Two Mamas was June 29, 2002.
How we named it – this was a long process, or at least at the time, it seemed long. The two girls and their husbands started putting their minds together to come up with a name. Kathy would call Amy with a name that she like and Amy wouldn’t like it. Then Amy would give it a try and Kathy wouldn’t like it. The two couldn’t come up with anything that they both agreed upon. Kathy wanted the name to have a story behind it and Amy wanted the name to be marketable. Now during this time of deciding on a name, Amy was pregnant, with her husband Brad’s son. Because Brad doesn’t do well with blood, pain and such, Amy knew that she was going to need someone to help her have this baby. So she decided Kathy was going to have to be her birthing partner. Now this child was going to be very special to Kathy. And since Kathy had already been an “aunt” for nine times, she didn’t want this baby to call her “Aunt Kathy”. She wanted her name to be something special.
The label for the salsa had been designed, however it didn’t have a name. The two girls knew they needed to decide on a name, so they called a special meeting. Kathy had heard someone call their grandmother “Two Mama” and she just loved it. It was at that point that she decided “Two Mama” was the name she wanted to be called by Amy’s baby, that she was helping birth. So, that was settled. Kathy would be the baby’s “Two Mama”. But, what about the name for the salsa, there still wasn’t a name for the Salsa.. Along came Amy’s husband, Brad and said “Okay….. the baby is going to call Kathy “Two Mama” and there are two of ya’ll, so why don’t you call it “Two Mamas” Salsa?” And the rest is history…
